But God- Begin to Live by Jesus

But God Image_Color_CrossAs we continue to respond to questions from readers, we invite questions and comments to our responses, as well as request additional questions. Here goes with our question for this blog. I have to confess up front I respond to this one in fear and trembling, knowing I'm skating on thin ice. Here's the question; "I have heard repeatedly I am to live by the teachings of the Bible. My question is, how do I know them all, and which ones?"

Well, my response will surprise some of you, and sound like heresy to others. Please read the entire response. My short answer is we are NOT supposed to live by the teachings of the Bible! Again, please keep reading.

Let me be clear- there is no doubt that the Bible is profitable for instruction in righteousness. Let's look at what it says; "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man (and woman) of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16&17 We have often understood this text to be talking about Scripture being primarily an instruction manual, aimed at our behavior. This is one of my favorite texts, but I believe that is a harmful misunderstanding of this text. These verses are NOT telling us to live by the teachings of the Bible. These verses ARE speaking of being trained in righteousness. Now, some will say that this view of Scripture is belittling to Scripture, but I believe that to see it as an instruction manual is belittling to it. Do we really believe that is the primary goal of the Bible? Jesus made it very clear in John 5:39, that He is the primary lesson of Scripture. That it is all about Him, not about me and my behavior. To understand the difference between the two, let's look at the word righteousness, this thing we are to be trained in by Scripture. What exactly does the Bible tell us about righteousness as it relates to us?

First, let's remember that as believers we have been made righteous and that our righteousness is a gift that has already been given to us in Jesus. Our being righteous has nothing to do with our behavior. It was and is and will always be a gift. Remember, the truest thing about us is what God says- not what we do or what we believe or how we feel or anything else- only what He says. We are told in Romans 5:17, that we have received the gift of righteousness (been made righteous) because of the abundance of His grace. So, you ask, what does this righteousness look like? According to 1 Corinthians 1:30, it looks like Jesus. He is our righteousness. In us and through us.

So then, if our desire is to live righteously, and it is, our job is to quit trying to live by the teachings of the Bible, and begin to live by Jesus. This will look like Galatians 2:20. In other words, it will look like us allowing Jesus, who is our righteousness, to live through us. What a relief! No longer do we need to try to live by the teachings of the bible, now we get to live by Jesus- Him in and through us being righteous. He who wrote the Bible knows the ways of righteousness and will be faithful to live them through us.

Thank you for reading completely, and keep those questions coming!

If you want to know what someone really thinks, just listen to what they say after the word ‘but’ …so it is here with…”but God!”“

Note: “but God” is a weekly ministry of Robinson Outdoors Products written for us by pastor and spiritual counselor, Thomas Paige. “But God” is posted each week on the ScentBlocker website and can be found there along with the archives of messages of past years and months from Thomas. “But God” is also posted each week on ScentBlocker Facebook page and on Twitter.

You may ask, “why would Robinson, an outdoor products company with brands ScentBlocker and Tree Spider, making products for hunters, spend its time on something like “but God”?” Great question, as we here at Robinson consider our work place our mission field, our products bearing the John 3:16 inscription our outreach. In every new ScentBlocker jacket there is a laminated waterproof pocket insert that contains the salvation message printed in two languages. And, we ask the Lord to provide more opportunities for us to be a light unto a dark world.

What responses do we receive from our customers? Each week thousands and thousands of people read the “but God” message online. We receive dozens and dozens of appreciative emails, rejoicing that a company has the courage to stand up for what it believes despite perhaps it not being the most popular thing to do these days. God has blessed our lives and our business!

I hope you will enjoy this weeks’ “…but God” as Thomas continues the series, unto the Lord!

Hello Pastor Thomas, I was just trying to find more info on "The Beast" when I happened to see the "but God" box. I clicked on it and was rewarded with your insights about a subject very near and dear to my heart, Jesus. I am a retired deputy sheriff and also had a part time business called Walnut Creek Archery in Upland, Indiana for 22 years. I closed my business June 2015 and now work part-full time for my son, Jim, in his business, Walnut Creek Outdoors. I gave my life to the Lord on August 29, 2001 and have been a work in progress ever since. Being led by the Holy Spirit when I will listen, my Pastor and I started a Men's Fellowship for archers and hunters at my old shop 9 years ago and it is still going on today. We are just finishing our study on Roman's and your words about righteousness rang so true that it is all about Jesus and the righteousness we received as a gift from Him. I also did not realize that Robinson had the tag of John 3:16 in their clothing. I sold Robinson clothing for years and now my son and his wife also sell it. I am glad that we handle and use your products especially now that I know that we are brothers and sisters in Christ.
    Thank you for your faith.
    In His Service,
