We Were Dead. We Were Sinners. We Were Orphans. We Were Lost.

So then, we were dead. We were sinners. We were orphans. We were lost and didn’t know it, BUT God had mercy on us and this mercy is motivated by His love for us. Amazing! BUT, what does this love look like? How can we describe it? We really can’t describe it, BUT let’s begin to see how God describes it in  1 John 3:1

His beloved disciple John states it in this way, “See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the children of God; and such we are.”

The word translated here as ‘great’ in other translations is translated as ‘marvelous’, ‘incredible’, and ‘manner’, to name a few. What the Greek work means literally is, foreign, alien, and exotic. What God is saying through John here is that His love is totally unlike any other love you have ever known. It is truly as if God is saying to us “you think you know what love is like, BUT I will show you real love.” Wow! This love He has for us is a gift, it was ‘bestowed’ upon us, we have done nothing to deserve it. Whether we know it or not, whether we receive it or reject it, whether we treasure it or trash it, it is ours. Gifted by God. No expiration date. Now that is foreign.

Well, that’s a first glimpse at His love – more next week. I hope you join us in thanking God the Father for this gift of His love.
