The BOOM! of my shotgun interrupted the otherwise calm spring hayfield. Turkeys scattered, feathers flew, and the end result was a fat spring tom laying in the damp, un-mown grass. Spring turkey hunting is an age-old ritual, and with all of their new innovations sprinkled with a bit of creativity, ScentBlocker gear is now a standard in the spring turkey woods. Recon Gear ScentBlocker’s Recon gear is perfect for the use and abuse that a dedicated turkey season of runnin’ and gu...

Montana Turkey Hunting Success! - A Family Affair Day one of Montana turkey season started with Darrell and me hitting the ground blind at 5 am. Weather conditions not very good; with chances of snow and temperatures in the low 20's, it was going to make for a long morning. After sitting in our blind until noon, and only calling in 12 jakes, we decided to hit the road and head home to warm up. I asked Darrell if he wanted to go out for an evening hunt and he dec...

The gently flowing creek was as cold as it was clear. I’ll never forget setting my eyes on that beautiful 3 point whitetail shed resting on the smooth gravel bar. I was touching something no human hand has ever touched before. I was six years old and my buddy and I were out searching for shed antlers. Looking back, I now realize we were shed hunting pioneers! I’m reminded of that day every time I pass my china cabinet in our home where the shed proudly rests. Some...

ScentBlocker Running Gear? By Jason Herbert I had a chance to put my 8th layer shirt to the test this weekend and was really impressed with the results. To stay in hunting shape I like to run long distances. I had a 33.5 mile “Ultra” marathon this past weekend and wore my 8th layer shirt under my sweatshirt. The weather was cold, windy and miserable but my shirt held out! In fact, it was really warm and dry. With its MicroWick technology, I was impressed with how quickly it...

Next Season is Already Here By Jason Herbert The pungent smell was familiar, and got my heart pumping. I'd been watching bucks file by my stand all evening long and although I did not choose to shoot one of them, I felt rewarded that they had read my script. One of them in particular was really rutted up and stunk something fierce. The wind was swirling but I hunted with confidence that my ScentBlocker gear and scent control routine would help me get close enough to kill. Unfortunately the...

Predator Hunting Basics By Jason Herbert Bear Archery's Olin Bare with a coyote he took with his Fred Bear Cutsom Takedown bow Not long ago I sat in this exact spot belting out deep buck grunts in hopes of catching the attention of a wandering whitetail. Now the scenery was a bit different; I was still downwind of a thick, nasty bedding area but there was a foot of snow on the ground and nothing green in sight. Also, instead of a grunt tube I was wailing on a rabbit distress call in...

13 year old Sam Gernaat had a day to remember last fall. Sam was able to harvest this beautiful buck with the help of ScentBlocker. "My teacher at school, Mr. Herbert gave me a bunch of ScentBlocker stuff to try out this fall. I washed my clothes in it, took a scent free shower, and sprayed down with the spray he gave me. Not long after the sun rose, this buck tried to walk by me. He was directly downwind and didn't smell me at all. I waited till he passed to draw my bow. I drilled him in t...

If Ol' Man winter hasn't arrived in your neck of the hunting woods yet, he will soon. Typically this is the time of year when the idea of scent control becomes a dream of the past, and most hunters are simply worried about staying warm.  Ironically enough, the deer are at their wits end and have no patience for sloppy hunters. Even though we aren't sweating bullets when we arrive at our frozen stands these days, we still need to practice scent control. Dress in layers as to not...

Since early man began hunting deer, we’ve been trying to gain an advantage over their acute senses. Many hunters take to the trees each fall to elude the whitetail’s sense of smell and their suspicious eyes. Using a treestand certainly helps, but it isn’t the answer to everything. Man will never be able to beat the animal’s sense of survival, but there are a few tricks we can try to increase our odds. Trick #1- Camouflage the treestand. After that perfect treestand is hun...

Well, it is getting closer to that special time of year. You know, that time of year when we all try to turn our daydreams into reality. By now you should have a pretty good idea about where that special stand is going to hang. If not, there is still a little time left to get things in order. For me, this time of year is spent checking game cameras and trying to put another piece of the whitetail puzzle together....

Being young hunters, we like to think we know what we are doing and talking about, but when the lights come on our true talents can show themselves. But, this is no way a bad thing. Everyone goes through the young "green" stage of hunting. It's what we learn from at those times that makes us better hunters and makes us to realize how every emotional roller coaster that happens in hunting is all part of the experience....
