The Adventure Begins - Day 1

My 2-day plane ride will conclude in a small South African city of Kimberley.

There I will be met by my long time friends Andries Schutte and Schalk Tait, both PH's with tons of hair-raising experiences. I have trusted these two guys on every African hunt I've ever taken.

This trip, my destination is the Northern Cape region of the Kalahari.

I will be hunting with very well known Johnny Vivier Safaris and Wintershoeck Safaris. These guys have been providing successful "Big-5" hunts for decades. Im told that their hunting land, their lodges and accomodations, and especially their trophy animal quality are some of the very best in all of Africa. I am anxious to find out first hand.

My quarry....a mature long-maned male lion. Exciting stuff as we will be filming for ScentBlocker Most Wanted TV with videographer Larry Woodward. Also, another old friend Jay Scholes who will bowhunt for black Wildebeast and other plains game.

I have been to many places on the Dark Continent and have had some exciting bowhunts for Cape Buffalo in Tanzania, leopard, eland and bush pig in the beautiful Waterburg mountains and every variety of plains game and spiral horned critters imaginable!

But this trip, bowhunting for a big male lion has all the makings to be the craziest high adventure, adreneline-pumper I've ever attempted.

A few details to set the stage for the upcoming adventure: African lions have been in contact with people so often that today's generation of big cats are not really afraid of man anymore. In truth, mature male lions have no enemies, and they fear no one or no thing. They are truly kings of the wild kingdom.

This fact is quite significant as we try to "stalk" to within 40 yards or less for the shot. If the lion knows you are there ( which is most likely),...he may not run away! Then, when he sees and hears the ligthning fast arrow streak from me to him...and he gets whacked with that giant 3-blade Rage broadhead...wham! He roars and goes wild...spinning and growling, he's instantly pissed off and instead of running off.... he often comes at full speed straight at us. No bluff charges in this script! When he comes, Andries and Schalk have 3-5 seconds to put him down. This is the real deal brother! Did I happen to mention how much I appreciate me dear PH friends Andries and Schalk?

My gear: ScentBlocker from head to toe, of course. I'm shooting a Mathews "Monster 6" set at 80 lbs. Which generates 100 ft/lbs of kenetic energy at 321 fps with a 435gr. Easton ACC Pro Hunter. Plenty enough horsepower to slap that big Rage 3-blade clear through that 600 lbs pussy cat!

I will follow up, sending details and pictures of the hunt every day or two.

Stay tuned!.....my lion bowhunt starts Tuesday!

Come along on another bowhunting adventure!!!
