MOCK SCRAPE: A KEY TOOL FOR FOOLING BUCKS
Mock Scrapes have been used for years. It is just another tool that hunters have on their belts to fool a mature wary whitetail. Mock scrapes are designed to entice mature whitetails to an area to check out an unwanted intruder(s) on his territory. Mock scrapes are not as easy as just going to the woods, picking a spot and clearing the ground to bare dirt and dumping urine on it. There are a few things that go unnoticed that need to take place before you should place a mock scrape.
The number one mistake most people make with mock scrapes is not controlling their scent. A mock scrape with human scent all over it can be futile and turn any buck away. Treat every mock scrape as if you were going to hunt from it immediately. Dress into your ScentBlocker suit when you get to your hunting destination, not before you leave home! Spray down with any of our scent elimiation sprays and always, I repeat always, where your carbon lined gloves, facemask and hat. By doing this you have controlled your scent as best you can.
Once out on your hunting property you want to look for spot that you think mature bucks roam. You may have trail cam pics from earlier in the year at a certain area that is home to a mature buck. Funnels are a great spot to place mock scrapes as mature bucks will roam inside the woodline to decrease their chances of being seen. Another successful spot is a bench, these are flat areas on a hill side that bucks run to scent check does during the rut. As you can see there are many places to utilize a mock scrape and when it comes down to it just think like a buck, where would you hide.
Once you have found your spot take a 3-4 foot stick and scrape around the area being careful that you dont touch the scraping end of the stick. Scrapes range in sizes from 1 foot x 1 foot to 2 feet x 1 foot. Generally speaking, the bigger the scrape the more mature the buck. So, I like to make my scrape bigger. Another quick tip, place the scrape underneath a licking branch. Bucks like to lick the branches above their scrape to leave another form of their scent behind.
Once the ground is cleared you then take the Scent Shield's Still Steamin' rutting buck lure and sprinkle it over the scrape. Congratulations you just created a scrape! Now, I always like to put a trail camera next to a mock scrape to see what is coming to check it out, therefore giving me a heads up of which buck is in the area.
